Wednesday, April 2, 2008
Lois Weber (American, 1881-1939) was one of the first women to make a significant mark as an independent filmmaker and was also one of the very first filmmakers to use the medium as a means of speaking out on social issues. She wrote, acted, directed, designed sets and costumes, edited and developed negatives. She also was involved in sound experimentation for films. In 1917 she established her own production house, and its films were released through Universal Pictures for the rest of her career.
