National Volcanic Monument
In its lush setting, Mt. St. Helends had remained dormant since 1957, until May 18, 1980. That day, one of the most destructive volcanic explosions recorded in North America occurred, propelling debris for hundreds of miles. Mt. St. Helens has been replenishing itself and continually changing ever since.
