Along the Badaling Great Wall a large number of beacon towers were built at locations of strategic importance. In case of offense, smoke would be produced in the towers at daytime, and fires would be lit after nightfall so that within short notice message would reach the capital.

Sacred Way at the Ming Tombs

The Ming Tombs is a term given to the mausoleums of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty. The Sacred Way that leads to the tombs is flanked by a group of stone sculptures, 24 in animal and 12 in human forms. UNESCO designated the Ming Tombs as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2003.
